So I've just bought a secondhand DRZ400e and after about 400km of riding it was starting to perform pretty poorly and wouldnt start well. Check the valve clearances and sure enough one of them was out of spec. In fact, there was no clearance at all. Anyway, I pulled it out and it had a 2.2mm shim in it and that means I would have to go to a 2mm at least to go within spec. I once read somewhere that 2mm is the smallest shim you can put in one of these bikes because any smaller and the shim will not be sitting below the inner surface of the bucket? Basically, the side walls that surround the shim will be contacting the valve rather than the shim? Not sure if true or not but I thought someone may have a better clue than me.

If I can't adjust it any further do I need to replace the valves or the head?

Thanks

By the manual yes you are out of shim adjustment,

If you are lucky you will only need new valves.

First step is off with the head and have a look. It may have had a valve reface in the past.

Is it intake or exhaust and only one or more valves.
