TOPIC: Tough to start/ no idle

Tough to start/ no idle 5 years, 3 months ago #4288

Hey guys so I've got a weird one here. I bought an '01 400e a little while ago with a bad crank in it and ended up getting a good deal on a whole bottom end so i just replaced the whole bottom end. when i went and first looked at the bike it ran fine and idled great and everything, but now after being completley rebuilt and put back together it is having a tough time starting. I didnt change anything with the carbs and im pretty sure i put the valves back right. I put a new pilot jet in to no avail. Th bike will sputter and cough but won't start. I did get it running once or twice though and it ran great when i could keep it at higher RPMs.

my valve specs are

intake
.006 in on shifter side
.004 brake side

ex
.009 shiff side
.008 brake side.

Is this normal? im thinking valves, pilot circuit, or fuel air, but i cant seem to get it right. I'd love to hear what yu guys think.

Thanks,
Daniel

Daniel, your clearances are to tight

Intake 0.10mm ~ 0.20mm
Exhaust 0.20 ~ 0.30mm

All explained here mate, hope this helps
