Some Noob questions:

1) Anyone recommend cleanable K&N air filters for these bikes ($48 on ebay), or just buy cheap re-usable ones (seen em for about $16 on ebay

2) How many washers/o-rings needed for sump bolts/oil filter during oil change?

3) Any recommendations for cheap parts online, or is it just the usual ebay?

4) What oil? Castrol Oil selector recommends either CASTROL POWER 1 GPS
or CASTROL POWER 1 RACING. This sound about right?

5) Tyre pressures. Road/sand/hard dirt

That's all for now.

1. I now use funnel web filters for air filters and rate them
2. o ring under the oil filter and the cover with the spring. There should be flat helicoil washers on the sump bolts already. Download the manual from this site and keep it handy and refer to that.
3. I get gear and some parts from torpedo 7, else Ballards or MCAS in syd, or ebay, or RMATV or wheeling cycle supplies in the US.
4. I use motul or caltex synthetic
5. hate riding in sand so dunno. ROad 18+ dirt 14- or 16- I had mine down to 10 last weekend in the mud.

This web site will become your new best friend: www.thumpertalk.com/forum/17-dr-z-400/

There is always lots of discussion on oil, but to avoid what has become known as "deep fried stator" experienced DRZ mechanics generally agree that you should use a good quality ester based full synthetic oil of the correct viscosity. I only run Motul 7100 20W50, but anything with similar specs should be ok.

The TT store attached to that site ^^ is also a good place to source parts for your DRZ. It's usually best to buy a few things at once to save on shipping, below is an example of a recent order I did so you get an idea of their pricing. Note the price of their "ready to use" air filters.

Cheers,
JD

Order Summary
--------------------------
1 - [29-5054] Moose Shock Bearing Kit @ $19.95

1 - [29-5024] Moose Shock Bearing Kit @ $15.95

1 - [28-1047] Moose Swingarm Bearing Kit @ $68.95

2 - [AFR-3403-00] Maxima ProFilter RTU Air Filter @ $9.45

1 - [04-0207] Motion Pro Clutch Cable @ $19.90

1 - [25-1079] Moose Wheel Bearing and Seal Kit @ $22.95

BundyJD - many thanks for the reply - will chack out that website.

Do Castrol oils fall into the catagories you mentioned (have had deep fried stator before on another bike - pain), or would you go with the Motul?

Cheers

G'day Clarky,

Not sure about the Castrol stuff - there isn't much info on their website.

I always use Motul.

Just had my first service done at Brisbane Motorcycles yesterday (1000km). They use Shell VSx4 Oil. Service was $220 by the way, I'll do my own servicing from now on probably every 2000 or so k's depending on what riding I do.
Do I really have to go to work on Monday

DRZ2011, thats not to bad a price for a service , the big shop down my way wants an arm and a leg as well as blood , then you get some punk in nappies who rode in on his skate board working on your bike for $85 - $95 an hour . I stick to the smaller shops now , i think as riders we need to , once the small guy is gone you know what happens then $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. And ebay is my best friend for parts ..cheers ..

The Motul 7100 was what I used to use onmy TTR250, good oil I'll probably use it on the DRZ.

Someone on here said they use Amsoil. I got some and when you are giving it shit down a road and change gears in that sweet spot in the rev range it just sounds shit hot. Nice and smooth.
