I got a Ballards (performance) baffle off a guy on here. It has shut the bike up considerable but I wouldn't say it sounded better - reminds me of an XR400.

If I hadn't got it as cheap as I did, I wouldn't have bothered. The stock baffle had had the outer sleeve removed when I bought it otherwise I would have tried drilling out the holes.

I recon the stock exhaust isn't too bad. In saying that, I may look at replacing it with a DEP alloy unit at one stage - mainly to save weight. I would also like to replace the header, probably before the silencer mainly as the stock unit is a fairly flimsy looking vulnerable bit of left over mild steel so I would like a stainless powerbomb or something like it.

Just out of interest I used a DSE noise meter at 1 metre distance at 90 degrees and about 1/3 revs. The maximum reading was 100 Db and average was 99Db.

I would be very interested in the diferrence between a stock exhaust and a after market one ?? on a dyno ?? ..I did feel a bit of difference when i put on the fmf pipe but was really looking to save weight ...perhaps there isnt that much differrence at all ?..Maybe just a lot of good advertising and its got most of us believing there a must have ... One things for sure and i dont think anyone will disagree... there a whole lot better looking....

I have seen some dyno figures and the most I have seen is 3hp gain over the stock one with the baffle (outer sheath) removed.

Looks - it's not hard to have a better looking silencer. I was thinking about wrapping mine in carbon fibre or maybe sandblasting, polish and laquer. I have seen some pipes that don't look much better. The twin yoshi doesn't look as good as I thought, and some silencers are massive and sit at odd angles.

Loosing weight is always a good thing to do on the DRZ. That's why I am not a fan of the Staintune - no question they are reliable and offer a marginal performance gain but I can't see the stainless unit weighing less than the stock steel can.

Each to their own, and it's those differences that make the bike as individual as the rider - which is a great thing, unlike KTM riders LOL!

It's really nice, a very good quality unit. Sounds good too.

There are more pics and info down near the bottom of this page;

Lol that link was a blast from the past, I used to read your beetle build up blog when I first joined the manx club years ago! (when it first started).

I ended up putting a full Yoshimura system on my DR, was originally looking at a Staintune system but the finances dictated that the Yoshi at $600 was better value than the Staintune at $900. I am yet to actually go for a decent ride (yet to actually ride my DRZ really) to tell the difference.

The Yoshi fit on the bike very nicely and looks the goods. The header pipe has a much bigger diameter than the stock one, plus the way that it wraps around the frame etc is better than stock (in my opinion only)

Hard to tell? My bike was bought second hand and the standard pipe was a bit rude. I havent bothered to pull the end off the standard to see what is in there. It is comparable with my wifes DRZ which is fitted with a Staintune slip on and standard header.

Both the Yoshi and the Stantune dont have the end bungs in if that is any help.

On a side note for a comparison, it is not as loud as what my WR450 was with a Barrett pipe.

Yeah, dirt bikes and offroad VW's are very similar really. They are both rear wheel drive and about power to weight ratio :)

My Baja is way faster than the DRZ on dirt trails until they get real rough and then the DRZ's suspension allows it to keep a higher pace if your game :)

I also have the Yoshi RS3 system and with the screen insert still in, it is quieter than stock.
