Thought i would ask the guys in the know! I have not had my Drz for long and it has only done 1200k's so is running whatever crap Suzuki want to put in at the first service. My mate runs Motul 300v in his Ktm but that stuff is like liquid gold and the last time i checked gold was expensive ;) Leaning towards the Motul 5100 semi-Syn but still not the cheapest oil around. Think i may change oil every couple of thousand k's just to keep the oil fresh. What do you guys think and what sort of servicing schedule do you guys keep with your thumpers?
Mick.

I use motul 5100 10w40 have done with all three of my drz,s .. Only ever changed the oil every 6000 km with the motard and the s model , but every 3000 with the e model because i feel it gets a harder work out in the bush ..(not that im in the know) If you feel like your riding it hard , maybe more often ..

Motul 5100. I change it every 1000km. I sometimes change it earlier than this if I have been on a particularly hard ride or if I know I'm going on a hard one. Oil is cheap when compared to engine failure.

I use Rock oil semi synthetic , Shell Vsx synthetic, or lately Caltex Delo400 diesel oil. Cheap in 20L drums.

On my Yamaha WRF290 I change oil and filter every 500 Km. The Suzuki I plan to change oil at 1000km intervals , unless it has a hard ride, then I will change it.

The last oil I bought was a mobil semi-syn designed for bikes. It was about $52 for 4 litres which is ok.

I run semi-synthetic as a rule on second hand bikes that I don't know the history of. Synthetic and mineral based oils have react differently with the seals. It is usually safe to go from synthetic to mineral based but not the other way around, because synthetic oils tend to be slightly thinner for the same viscosity (Winter) rating.

Theoretically, a oil with the rating of 15W50 will retain it's physical characteristics throughout that temperature range. This is not directly proportional to how thick or thin the oil is out of it's package though.

Oil degradation is another thing to consider. In theory, Synthetic Oils will return to it's "Said State" more often than mineral based oils.

Diesel oil is very good to run in new bikes due to it's higher detergent content, but oil will tend to require changing more often.

My level of knowledge is limited however, to what the ASPI (or other funny acronyms) means - automotive course didn't cover that 15 years ago. All I remember being told is there is allot of marketing ploys that go into calling it a "motorcycle" oil.

As always, happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

Seems like the Motul is the oil of choice here. Guess as long as its changed quite often i can't really go wrong ;)

Valvoline DuraBlend, I used it on my WR, plan to use it in the DRZ as well. Fairly cheap for a semi synthetic

Well i changed the oil in the Drz. A mate gave me the heads up on this gear called Amsoil. Put it in and noticed the difference straight away! Gear changes although very smooth on the old oil crispened right up and it just feels so much more precise. The motor feels like it winds a lot smoother also. The old shit that came out of the bike looks and feels like shit compared to this stuff and i'm not convinced Suzuki even changed the oil filter on it's first service  The old oil filter had a Jap code on it where the replacement i just put in has the Au code. If they changed it i would have expected the Au code on the one i pulled out....
