In July I'm entering in the Indee 500 desert race here in Northern W.A.

For those that havent heard of it , its 500kms over 2 days .Day 1 is 3 laps of the 100km track and on day 2, 2 laps.

I have done just the basic mods to the bike and want to keep it that way as in performance or other wise I would have bought a different bike.

The mods are , removed brake light, head lights , indicators ,rear tool bag/ helmet lock. With replacing the front number plate for a MX one , changed the rear spring for my weight and to help over the whoops, 20mm bar risers with pro taper bars along with bark busters, radiator guards and a bash plate.
Also changing the gearing, I have gone for a 15 up front but sure if I should drop one at the back as well .

Most of this is still in progress.
For some training I have moved my bike up to Parraburdoo to ride in afew of their Ironman races to get a feel for the terrian.

I'm 40 yrs old and weigh about 100kgs (which I need to loose some soon),
The last time I raced was about 23 yrs ago racing MX.
Its a bit of a mid life crisis I think, but hey what the heck , you only live once.

As some of you will read this and you will think 1 of 2 things.
I'm a crazy old looney (or worse)
or
Good on ya and have a go.

Im not out to win it but just do the best I can on a damn good bike.

So if anyone out there has done any desert racing on a Drz , I am interested in the gearing that would be best.
As I wont see my bike for afew weeks so Im trying to save a bit of time on the gearing issue.

Thanks
That's the whole idea and my love of dirt riding.
I want to go from west to east of Australia through the middle on a bike but that's a costly excersie .

Good on ya Paddo.

Hey come and join Perthtrailscene.com and maybe you'll be able to hook up for a few rides after the Indee 500.

Had my first race yesterday a 3 hr pony express which I did the Ironman event.
The race was stopped just over half way (11/2 hrs) due to riders breaking afew bones.
I was really impressed with the bike with the way it handled.
I got 16th overall , which wasnt to bad since I havent raced in over 2 decades.
Next race is a 2 day enduro at Kumarina then the Indee.

Well I didn't make to the indee due to fitness reasons(had big crash)
I did take out first place for my class in another Kumarina 2 day enduro.
And crashed in the last Paraburdoo 2 day enduro a fortnight ago.
Bike held up well, a lot better than I did anyway.

I will be stripping the bike down to reduce as much weight as possible for next year, bike is still to heavy.
