I Have a 2008 and my mate a 2009 400E. Both were bought 2nd hand but still had the stock exhaust. The 'snorkle' had been removed from both bikes too.

Have installed full FMF P4 exhausts (header pipe & muffler).

Have done approx 4-5000 kms since (last 12 months) and have never had an issue.

What gives you the reason that needles / jets and to be modded or re-done?

I think some1 else stated (and I have read same) that the Australian 'E' is done rich from factory so no mod is needed.

This is just my observation on my 2 bikes.

Cheers

Chances are that you will achieve more airflow through the motor when you mmodify airbox/ exhaust (for more power). This is effectively making the mixture lean as jet sizes are fixed and fuel flow is constant and with more
air: therefore leaner. You will notice this as slight surgeing in top gear at a constant throttle. Raising the needle a notch or two will effectively richen the mixture as the needle is tapered and this will allow more fuel into the air flowing through the carburettor.
